Surf Story
Traveller-surfer looking for a dream, open your eyes…
You are sailing on a “Dhoni”, small boat serenely and slowly going off a secret atoll .Sheltered from the sun beneath the tank, you coast ride for two hours, and you can still see this Indian Ocean and its intense colour…
100 meters away, within the thick mist of the early morning, is unrolling a magical left, only for a few friends ! The dream of the lost islet is only for you, away from the rest of the world in this scenery that looks like a postcard. It is breaking the lip of mythic waves. Or go for an “Outer Atoll” Trip on Huvadhoo, Laamu islands with uncrowded spots.
History
Around 500 B-C – The first inhabitants are coming from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and from Southern India. It would appear that the people of the archipelago are sun-worshippers.
In the 12th century, the conversion to Islam brought by the Arabic traders is a turning-point in the history of the archipelago, from now on ruled by sultanates.
17th century – Maldives become successively a Dutch and then a British protectorate.
In 1953 - The Republic of Maldives is declared, and the sultanate is abolished. If the traditionalism comes out during some demonstrations, like the beginning and the end of the Ramadan, the Divehi modern culture (Maldives’ culture) goes through influences like the Indian movie industry, Asian martial arts, or Western music and fashion.
Geography
The archipelago of Maldives is located about 600 km Southwest of Sri Lanka, in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
It is made of about 1 200 coral islets of which 202 are inhabited and gathered in 26 atolls. The whole is spreading on all sides of the equator, 750 km long and 298 km total.
Only 0.4% of the territory of the Republic of Maldives is composed of firm soil. Some islands are only a long strip of white sand and a few hectares of bush. Others, vaster, have a richer vegetation.
The most important atoll is the Malé one, where the capital, the islands and the hotels and surf spots are organized.
350 km down South, Hubadhoo’s “Outer Atoll” provides regular and constistent waves, within a magnificent and inhabited scenery.
There still are plenty of undiscovered spots or kept secret ones among the hundreds of islets along the coral barriers the best exposed to the swell…
